In a Karate gym, the belt is not just part of the equipment - it is a statement about the level of discipline, effort and maturity achieved by each practitioner. For sports clubs, coaches, federations and parents, understanding the symbolism and rules behind each colour is essential to properly support the athlete's development.

From children starting at 5-6 years of age to elite athletes, the belt provides a clear structure of progress, recognised worldwide.

1. The origin of the belt system in Karate

Classification system Karate colour was introduced in the early 20th century, inspired by the structure found in Judo. The colours symbolise not only technical progress but also the spiritual maturity and character of the athlete. Each colour marks a stage of evolution, starting with the white belt and culminating with the black belt and Dan grades.

2. The standard order of the belts (Shotokan style - the most widespread in Romania)

Note: The number of kyu may vary according to style and federation (Wado-ryu, Goju-ryu, Shito-ryu, etc.), but the symbolism remains similar.

White Belt (10 kyu) - Beginning of the road

Belt white marks innocence and lack of knowledge. The student is open to learning and literally a „blank page”. It is the stage where correct posture, the first basic techniques and dojo rules are learnt.

Budo Best recommendation: lightweight, breathable kimono, white belt included, ideal for children and beginners.

Yellow belt (9-8 kyu) - First rays of insight

It symbolises light breaking through, the first understandings of the movements and rules. Students begin to perform kihon (basic techniques) correctly and learn their first kata.

Examinations involve: striking combinations, first stances, theoretical answers about dojo kun (Karate moral code).

Orange belt (7-6 kyu) - Root strengthening

The practitioner gains confidence, stability and coordination. They learn to combine techniques and manage their energy. The first forms of kumite (sparring) are introduced and parents begin to see results in discipline and concentration.

Budo Best embroidered orange belts - available with personalised names or kanji, great for motivation.

Green belt (5-4 kyu) - Development and perseverance

The student begins to understand not just how a technique is done, but why. He has a solid foundation and takes an active role in the dojo. It's an important time when many young people decide whether to continue on their performance path.

Examinations are becoming more complex, involving advanced kata and fast reactions in kumite.

Blue belt (3-2 kyu) - Broadening horizons

This colour expresses courage, maturity and strategic thinking. The practitioner becomes a leader in the group, an example to colleagues. He trains constantly, learns to correct mistakes and support junior colleagues.

For intense training, protective gear becomes essential: shin guards, gloves, helmet - all available from Budo Best in special club kits.

Brown belt (1 kyu) - Depth and responsibility

The student is almost ready to move to the advanced level. He has competition experience, knows the rules and understands the moral code of Karate. He is a mentor to his peers and is beginning to study the history and philosophy of the style.

👉 For official ceremonies, Budo Best offers brown belts embroidered with symbols of the style and club.

Black Belt (Dan) - The beginning of the real deal

Contrary to expectations, the black belt does not mark the end. It is a new beginning, where practitioners learn to teach, understand the subtleties of each technique and become ambassadors of the style.

Dan grades (1-10) represent progressive levels of expertise and contribution to the martial arts community.

👉 Budo Best makes professionally embroidered black belts with the Tajima system - embroidery in Japanese, Latin, Chinese or Korean, personalised for each practitioner.

3. How to get the next belt?

To progress to the next level, the student must fulfil:

  • Minimum number of training sessions (set by the federation or club);
  • Practical exam (kihon, kata, kumite);
  • Theory exam (history, vocabulary, ethics);
  • Coach's recommendation.

Romanian federations (FR Karate, FR Kempo, FR Traditional Karate) organise official seminars, summer camps and national championships where athletes can test their progress.

4. The role of equipment in each athlete's journey

As the learner progresses, they need:

  • Top quality, thicker kimono with double stitching for strength;
  • Personalised embroidered belts for motivation and club identity;
  • Certified protective equipment - especially for children (5-18 years) involved in competitions.

👉 Budo Best supplies all these products, both in Romania and in Europe, being the first Romanian manufacturer in this field, active since 1990.
