Sai (钗) is a traditional Japanese weapon, actually a traditional weapon of the people of Okinawa Island. It has the shape of a dagger with two metal arms starting from the handle giving it a trident appearance. It is one of the weapons in the Okinawa Kobudo discipline. It is used in pairs (one sai in each hand). For a time it was the weapon of the Japanese police in Okinawa (ufuchiku) used to arrest criminals and for crowd control, the use of the sai being perfected in 1668 by Moto Chohei, an Okinawan prince. Sometimes the policemen had three sais (one on the back and two in the hands). The sai were extremely useful weapons in disarming the ronin. With the help of special techniques, the police could very easily break the blade of a katana.
Sai as a weapon has been used in many other countries such as India, Thailand, Vietnam, China and Indonesia. The origin of the sai is Indian, evolving from the named weapon Trisuli.

It is believed that this weapon pattern spread to Asia simultaneously with Hinduism and Buddhism.
