Judo 柔道 is a modern Japanese martial art (Gendai budō). In 1882, starting from the principles of traditional jujutsu and retaining its techniques of projection and holds, Professor Jigoro Kano created his own style, known as Kano-ryu, and later called Kodokan Judo.
Its principles are based on the use of suppleness instead of brute force. Kicks and some dangerous dislocations have been removed. In judo projectiles, reapings, groundings, strangulations and dislocations are used.
With time judohas lost its character and properties as a martial art by turning into a sport. In 1964 judo became an Olympic event.
The judo practitioner is called judoka. The hall where judo is practiced is called dojo. Judo equipment, named you judge, was introduced by Kano in the year 1907.
