Master Morihei Ueshiba poster. It is a poster showing the image of the great aikido master, Morihei Ueshiba.
He was born on December 14, 1883 in Tanabe, Japan, the only boy of five children. His father was a wealthy farmer and a member of the Town Council.
He began his primary education at a Buddhist temple school in his hometown, where he learned about the Chinese classics and trained in a form of meditation called "Buddhist visualization".
At the age of 18, he opened a stationery shop in Tokyo with money received from his father, but after only 9 months he returned to his hometown after falling ill with beriberi. In 1902 he married Hatsu Itokawa, a distant relative, with whom he had a daughter and three sons, of whom only one reached adulthood.
When the Russo-Japanese War broke out in 1904, Ueshiba tried to enlist in the army, but because he was one centimeter short of the minimum height (157 cm), he was rejected. To elongate his body, he clung to trees with weights tied to his legs, eventually managing to be admitted.
In 1912 he moved to Hokkaidō Prefecture, where he learned daitō-ryū aiki-jutsu.
In 1927, he moved with his family to Tokyo and taught aikido.
In 1969, on April 26, he died at the age of 86 in the town of Iwama, Japan
After his death, his son Kisshomaru Ueshiba took over the leadership of aikido's destinies on an international level.
