Saya is the Japanese name for scabbard and refers expressly to the scabbard of one so much, wakizashi or katana. Saya they are generally made of light wood with a layer of varnish applied to the surface.

Appearance of sheath – saya – for the sword is located in time in the Period Edo. They were shira-saya (white sheath) without finishes, just for storage. In the Late Edo Period, some samurai wanted a sheath for keeping at home. These sheaths were called yasume-zaya (holster for rest) or abura-zaya (oil sheath). These saya they were not varnished, to let the blade of the sword - shinsakuto - breathe. After 1876, due to the Meiji Era ban on carrying swords on the street, koshirae (full assembly) went into decline.

Making a sheath is an art. A master works for an average wooden scabbard for 2 days. Instead to achieve a koshirae (complete assembly) takes about 6 months. But the price difference is also significant. A typical sheath made by a master cost around $300, while koshirae it's about $6,000.

The sheaths are currently made of wood oh (Magnolia obovata), tradition preserved from the end of the Period Heian. This wood is ideal for building sheaths – saya. It grows everywhere in Japan, is soft and does not scratch the blade, has a uniform grain and is easy to process.

A correct design and realization a saya involve the blade coming into contact with saya inside especially in the portion hello (back edge of the blade) than with Ha (the edge of the blade). Saya always has a grip applied to its surface – curried – to which it attaches sage (a ribbon of silk, cotton or leather). ends saya – kojiri & koiguchi - it is traditionally made from buffalo horn.
